My sustainable journey - the Start
I decided to start my sustainable journey after watching documentaries such "A plastic ocean" and reading articles showing the tremendous amount of toxines present in our environment. This toxines and micro plastics do not "only" end up in the sea but they go up the food chain, being eaten by the fishes and finally back to us. When I realized the impact of our current lifestyle on the environment, I felt I had to do something.
This is when my sustainable journey started. I like to use the word "journey" because it describes perfectly what it is: a on-going process.
My advice if you want to start this wonderful journey too, go for the quick-wins to make an immediate impact and not get overwhelmed. These quick-wins are easy to implement and highly effective. I'm talking about some of the top 10 re-usable plastics found on the beach and later in the ocean. They are plastic bottles, plastic straws and of course, plastic bags. We use plastic bags for an average of 12 minutes before sending them to the landfill where they will take at least 500 years to decompose. 500 years! This is insane!
The alternatives include reusable bottles to carry with you, reusable coffee cup, reusable straws (in bamboo or metal) and of course reusable bags such as tote bag and mesh bags. Try to swap these items and always carry them with you when you go for grocery or to work. You will be surprised how easy you will start this (good) habit!
Another great effect of this swap, is that you will become much more aware about the plastic around you. You won't miss it: it's everywhere!
